PET MICROCHIPPING
Microchipping is the most effective means of identification for your pet. Similar to vaccinations, microchipping is safe, quick, and causes little pain. The small microchip (the size of a grain of rice) is injected under the skin between the shoulder blades of your pet in a relatively harmless veterinary procedure. The chip is permanent, lasting the whole life of the pet. We still always recommend an ID tag be attached to your pet’s collar, but the microchip will help you know that if an accident does occur, your pet can be identified. We recommend all pets be microchipped regardless if they are inside or outside pets. Most veterinary hospitals and shelters are equipped with a handheld microchip scanner that can be used to check for a chip. If the pet has one, it will transmit its ID number to the scanner via a low-frequency radio wave. From there, they can retrieve the pet owner’s contact information from the manufacturer and call the owner. Microchip identification helps return an estimated 8,000 lost cats, dogs, and other animals to their homes every day. Microchips are the most reliable way to reunite pets with their owners and provide peace of mind.
